Managing modern distractions
The average worker faces hundreds of digital interruptions a day, and studies show it can take over 20 minutes to refocus after just one. This condition — Attention Deficit Trait (ADT) — is environmentally caused by constant connectivity, not a diagnosis like ADD. Five practical habits can help:
Email and phone notifications feed distraction every 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Turn off Outlook’s new-message alerts (File > Options > Mail) and disable app-by-app notifications on your phone.
Clear your desk and extra monitors of unrelated information. Minimize email unless you’re actively batch-processing it — an inbox left open is the most chaotic distraction in reach.
Work in focused intervals (25-40 minutes) followed by a short break. The brain holds deep focus well for about 25 minutes before losing it — a 5-minute break resets it for another round.
Brains function better after rest, and early hours have far fewer interruptions — often the most productive stretch of the day.
A repeatable checklist (business development outreach, client check-ins, social media) builds habits and keeps recurring tasks from falling off your radar.
Also worth investing in: personal health (sleep, exercise, mental health support), a healthy workplace culture, and a task/email management system — an effective document or task management tool reduces the background worry that erodes focus.
